Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

FOCARDI RUGGERO
Firenze 1864 - Quercianella (Livorno) 1934
Dopo aver studiato scultura sotto la guida del padre si trasferì a Londra. Nel 1881 vi conobbe T. Signorini con il quale, ritornato in Italia (1884), si dedicò alla pittura recandosi a dipingere nella campagna di Settignano: il sobborgo di Firenze, nel quale si trasferì a vivere, divenne fonte di ispirazione per paesaggi e soggetti campestri, che iniziò a esporre dal 1886 (Crociera di Settignano e Fra gli ulivi, presentati a Genova). Partecipò fra l'altro all’Esposizione Universale di Parigi del 1889 (Il gioco delle bocce, Firenze, Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Palazzo Pitti) e alle mostre di Firenze del 1891-1892 (Via di Felicita a Settignano, Effetto di pioggia) e del 1893 (Il gioco del ruzzolone). Si mantenne fedele a una maniera limpida e attenta alla resa atmosferica fino ai primi anni del Novecento, quando, influenzato dalla familiarità con P. Nomellini, volse verso una stesura più libera e intensamente colorata. Professore dal 1904 alla Scuola d’Arte di Santa Croce a Firenze, si occupò in seguito di storia e critica d’arte.
