Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

DELLA GATTA SAVERIO (XAVIER)
Attivo a Napoli fra il 1777 e il 1827
Sudiò all’Accademia di Napoli dive nel 1777 fu allievo di G. Cestaro. Nel 1782 assieme ad A. D’Anna ebbe l’incarico di documentare i costumi del Regno di Napoli; nel 1794 soggiornò a Roma dove realizzò Paesani e animali vicino alla tomba di Cecilia Metella (coll. privata). Abile esecutore della pittura a guazzo, dipinse scene di vita popolare e nitide vedute del territorio napoletano, ma anche soggetti mitologici e celebrativi.Dotato di una tecnica raffinata e corsiva, si accostò a P. Fabris sfruttandone il vasto repertorio di figure popolari; in seguito studiò i luminosi acquerelli di G. B. Lusieri, del quale adottò spesso le ampie aperture di campo. Con i primi anni '90 assunse l'accuratezza descrittiva di P. Hackert, da cui dipendono opere quali Rientro vittorioso delle flotte inglese e borbonica dopo la battaglia di Procida (1800, Napoli, Museo di San Martino). Negli ultimi anni intensificò la produzione di scene di folclore che, per le pressanti richieste del mercato, replicò in diversi esemplari con la tecnica del pochoir.
