Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

VIAZZI CESARE
Alessandria 1857 - Predosa (Alessandria) 1943
Dopo una prima formazione a Novi Ligure (Alessandria), frequentò le Accademie di Belle Arti di Roma (dal 1875), di Genova e di Torino (dal 1878); successivamente si iscrisse all’Accademia di Firenze e dal 1881 al 1883 soggiornò ancora a Roma. E’ di questi anni l’accostamento alle esperienze della Scuola Grigia genovese e, nel quadro di figura, alle sollecitazioni del Verismo meridionale (Il beccaio, 1883, coll. privata; Fanciulla con ciliegie, 1883-1885 Genova Nervi, Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna). L’attività successiva, testimoniata dalle numerose opere esposte alla mostra di Genova (1884-1901), di Milano (1884-1894) e di Venezia (1887), comprese paesaggi, sioggetti campestri e quadri di figura, dove si andò precisando la tendenza al Simbolismo (La perla, 1894, coll. privata) o al Decorativismo di gusto liberty. Stabilitosi a Genova nel 1893, nello stesso anno fu nominato accademico di merito e insegnante alla Ligustica. Fu anche impegnato in opere di decorazione (L’Indipendenza d’Italia, 1893, Genova, palazzo Raggio; Cavalcata delle Valchirie,1906, Roma, Galleria Venturi-Spada) e in tele di soggetto sacro (per il duomo di Porto Maurizio, 1898).
