Dictionary of Artists

 

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

Paesista e pittore d'interni, di formazione tardosettecentesca, dopo un soggiorno a Roma dal 1822 al 1824 (L'interno di San Pietro, Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum) si stabilì a Napoli dove si accostò a A. S. Pitloo (Il tempio di Venere a Baia, Una veduta del Largo del Castello, Napoli, Museo di San Martino). Figurò alle esposizioni borboniche dal 1826 al 1841 (1826, Interno della chiesa di San Giovanni a Carbonara, Interno della chiesa di San Lorenzo Maggiore, Napoli, Museo di Capodimonte; 1830, Vestibolo di San Giacomo; 1841, Interno della Cappella Reale di Palermo). Per soddisfare le numerose commissioni, fra le altre quelle di Ferdinando II di Borbone e dello zar Nicola I (Veduta della villa Floridiana, 1849, Napoli, Museo di San Martino), compì escursioni in Italia meridionale, alla ricerca di nuovi motivi; dal 1832 al 1839 tenne uno studio a Venezia (Piazza San Marco, Napoli, Palazzo Reale) e nel 1844 fece un breve viaggio in Turchia. Dopo alterni soggiorni a Gaeta (La flotta napoletana, francese e spagnola nella rada di Gaeta, 1849, Napoli, Museo di San Martino), a Napoli (Interno della certosa di San Martino, 1852, Napoli, Museo di Capodimonte), a Livorno, si trasferì negli ultimi anni a Venezia.
