Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

TOMINZ ALFREDO
Trieste 1854 - 1936
Iniziò la sua formazione col padre Augusto; la precoce predilezione per i soggetti riguardanti cavalli lo spinse a frequentare, a Monaco di Baviera (1870 ca.), la scuola di F. e E. Adam, specialisti nel genere. Le sue prime opere (Amazzone, 1876, esposto a Trieste nel 1877) rivelano un gusto tardo romantico per la ricchezza e l’eleganza dei costumi. Raggiunta una certa notorietà, abbandonò il fare accademico per una pennellata più sciolta in composizioni dinamiche, ispirate agli studi fotografici di E. Muybridge sul movimento degli animali (Corsa di bighe, 1907; Cavalli al pascolo, Trieste, Museo Revoltella; Biga romana, coll. privata). Espose poco e soprattutto a Trieste (1880, Triga romana; 1890, Mercato di cavalli; 1903, Ronzino istriano), ma anche a Torino (1880, Corse romane), Gorizia (1887, La fiera dei cavalli) e Capodistria (1910, Paesaggio). Nel 1883 subentrò al padre nella carica di conservatore del Museo Revoltella, incarico che mantenne fino al 1926. Si dedicò pure al ritratto (Giovanni Scaramangà d'Altomonte, Trieste, Camera di Commercio) e fu abile cartellonista per la Società Triestina del Trotto.
