Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

SCOPPETTA PIETRO
Amalfi (Salerno) 1863 - Napoli 1920
Studiò sotto la guida di G. De Chirico ad Amalfi e in seguito si spostò a Roma dove, nei primi anni '80, collaborò al periodico Cronaca Bizantina. Dal 1884, con i disegni per L'Illustrazione Italiana, proseguì la fortunata carriera di illustratore, per la quale si avvalse di una cultura aggiornata e di un segno agile e inconfondibile. Nel frattempo, rientrato ad Amalfi, si dedicò anche alla pittura, ritraendo la natura e i co-stumi della sua terra con una tecnica verista arricchita da un tocco pastoso e brillante (Ricordi d‘Amalfi, esposti nel 1883 a Milano). A Napoli, dove si trasferì nel 1890, fu presente con regolarità alle mostre della Promotrice e partecipò alla decorazione del Caffè Gambrinus. Fra il 1900 e il 1912 compì frequenti soggiorni a Parigi, maturando un ulteriore aggiornamento: la pennellata si fece liquida e filante nelle piccole vedute a soggetto parigino (Impressioni di Parigi, Roma, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna), estrosa e veloce negli interni di gusto belle époque (Notturno, coll. privata), più spigliata nei fortunati ritratti alla moda, mentre gli acquerelli mantennero una delicata levità.
