Dictionary of Artists

 

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

SCARABELLOTTO LORENZO
Trieste ? 1796 - Rio de Janeiro (Brasile) 1852
Studiò a Trieste con P. Pupilli e con G. Camisetta, ma per la formazione di scenografo guardò a G. B. Piranesi, A. Sanquirico e T. Orsi. Alla fase giovanile appartiene la Veduta di Piazza Grande (Trieste, Museo Scaramangà). Negli anni '30, già artista maturo, eseguì numerosi interventi nella sua città natale: nel 1833- 1834 decorò Casa Hierschel con paesaggi e vedute fantastiche di impianto scenografico; con l'amico G. Gatteri dipinse il soffitto della sala del ridotto del teatro Grande (perduto) e decorò Palazzo Vucetich nel 1834. Nello stesso anno si trasferì a Roma dove lavorò al teatro Apollo, al teatro Valle e all’Argentina. Ese-guì anche numerosi paesaggi e vedute, elaborando un linguaggio che coniugava la tradizione classica e il sentimento romantico: Chiaro di luna, La Piramide di Caio Cestio (1835, Trieste, Museo Revoltella); Veduta di Roma (1836, Trieste, Museo Civico Sartorio). Per il principe A. Tor- onia lavorò nella residenza di piazza Venezia (sala alla Turca, 1836; logge al piano nobile, 1840) e nella villa di via Nomen-tana (ambienti annessi al teatro). Nel 1852 lasciò Roma per Rio de Janeiro.
