Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

RAPETTI CAMILLO
Milano 1859 - 1929
Alunno di G. Bertini e R. Casnedi presso l’Accademia milanese di Brera, esordì nel 1877 con Motivo dal vero, avviandosi in breve a una promettente carriera di paesaggista: alle sue opere si interessò V. Grubicy, che già nel 1880 possedeva numerosi studi dell’autore, dipinti in Valsolda e sul Iago di Lugano, e alcuni ritratti (esposti alla mostra di Milano del 1880). Negli anni seguenti affiancò gli studi di paesaggio a quadri di figura (Ritratto della signorina Liuzzi, Papà non vieni?, Il preferito, Il medico condotto, esposti a Roma nel 1883). Assiduo alle mostre italiane fino al 1889, negli anni di passaggio tra i due secoli soggiornò a Parigi e a Londra. Tornò alle manifestazioni di Milano e Roma dal 1900. Sperimentò tecniche diverse e, come frescante, lavorò a Milano alle decorazioni del teatro Eden e della cupola della chiesa dell’Ospedale Maggiore. Sue opere si conservano a Milano, nella Galleria d’Arte Moderna (Ritratto di A. Mola Grubicy) e presso la Quadreria dell’Ospedale Maggiore (Paesaggio, Testa di donna, Signora con veletta).
