Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

QUADRONE GIOVANNI BATTISTA
Mondovì (Cuneo) 1844 - Torino 1898
Allievo all'Accademia Albertina di Torino di E. Gamba e G. Ferri, esordì alla Promotrice torinese con quadri di soggetto storico (1865; 1866, Amleto al camposanto, Torino, Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna). Subito dopo affrontò tematiche di genere con notazioni di vita e di costume minuziosamente descritte (Primi dolori, Biella, Museo Civico), seguendo anche la moda dei soggetti secenteschi e settecenteschi. Questo indirizzo, che gli assicurò una rapida notorietà anche all'estero, risentiva dell'influenza dei maestri francesi conosciuti durante un soggiorno compiuto a Parigi nel 1869-1870 e, specialmente, di J. L. E. Meissonier (L'agguato, 1869, Torino, Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna). Appassionato di caccia, soggiornò più volte in Sardegna, terra che ispirò molte sue opere degli anni '80, paesaggi, figure, scene venatorie con selvaggina e cani, animate da un autentico interesse per le caratteristiche dei luoghi (Ronzino sardo, 1884; Alt in Sardegna, 1886, Torino, Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna; Ritorno, 1892, Roma, Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna).
