Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

POSTIGLIONE LUCA
Napoli 1876 - 1936
Figlio di Luigi, fu pittore prolifico, allievo del padre e del fratello Salvatore. Espose alla Promotrice di Napoli dal 1896 al 1915 (1904, Rimembranze, Testa di donna, Abbozzo; 1906, Interno e Studio). Dipinse ritratti e scene di genere, spesso ispirate al folclore partenopeo (Ritratto femminile, Pulcinella, Milano, Museo Tea-trale alla Scala), con una tecnica vivace e segnata da esiti postimpressionisti. A questa produzione alternò una pittura dai toni più spenti, caratterizzata ora da densi impasti, alla maniera di A. Mancini (Lettura, Napoli, coll. Banca d'Italia), ora da pennellate libere e risaltate (La madre, Napoli, Amministrazione Provin-ciale). Nel 1904 presentò Orfana all'Esposizione Italiana di Londra e nel 1906 figurò con II giglio e La soglia alla Società degli Amatori e Cultori di Roma. Si cimentò anche con l’affresco e nel 1890, sempre a Napoli, insieme al fratello Salvatore, partecipò alla decorazione del Caffè Gambrinus e in seguito a quelle del Caffè Fortunio in via Toledo. Fu anche poeta dialettale di talento.
