Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

PISA ALBERTO
Ferrara 1864 - Firenze 1930
Era nato a Ferrara nella stessa casa dove viveva G. Boldini, con il quale sarà unito da stretta amicizia, e si formò in quella città con G. Domenichini, per poi proseguire gli studi a Firenze e a Roma. Si accostò ai Macchiaioli e nel 1886, durante un soggiorno a Parigi, prese contatto anche con le novità d’oltralpe. Decise poi di stabilire la propria dimora a Londra, dove visse per quasi trent’anni pur se con frequenti ritorni in patria. In Inghilterra, dove fu amico di J. A. Wisder, si affermò con vedute urbane all'acquerello, dalla pennellata rapida e compendiaria. Rientrato nella sua città, realizzò fra l'altro una serie di acquerelli con suggestive immagini di Ferrara, con le quali illustrò un volume di D. Zaccaini. Fece ritorno anche a Firenze (Autoritratto, Firenze, Uffizi) e qui si dedicò al paesaggio e alle scene di genere. Nel corso della sua carriera fu presente alle mostre di Venezia (1887, In chiesa, Madonna, Donna; 1903, Chiesa di Ravello; Casolare rustico a Ravenna), di Firenze (1881, due studi dal vero), di Milano (1897, In Regent Park) e di Torino (1902, Perugia-Palazzo Municipale).
