Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

GAVARDINI CARLO
Attivo a Roma fra il 1833 e il 1862
Di famiglia aristocratica pesarese, si trasferì a Roma prima del 1833 per frequentare l’Accademia di San Luca e la sua presenza è documentata nella capitale pontificia fino al 1862. Allievo di T. Minardi, si legò d’amicizia con N. Consoni con cui entrò nella “Scuola d’Atene”, sodalizio artistico volto al recupero del linguaggio dei Primitivi e di Raffaello. La sua prima opera nota è la decorazione della chiesa di Santa Maria sopra Minerva, che eseguì «sui pensieri» del collega B. Riccardi, in forme puriste legate al modello del Beato Angelico della orvietana cappella di San Brizio. Seguirono le opere dipinte per l’ordine dei padri Somaschi: a Roma, la cappella di San Girolamo Miani a Santa Maria in Aquiro e la tempera dell'abside nella chiesa dei Santi Bonifacio e Alessio; a Velletri, la volta della chiesa di San Martino Vescovo. Verso il 1862 realizzò nella basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura Incontro di S. Paolo e dei Romani nel Foro Appio e San Paolo abitando a Trastevere insegna agli Ebrei del Sud. Dalle fonti è ricordata anche una grande composizione dantesca, ispirata al Purgatorio.
