Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

FANELLI FRANCESCO
Livorno 1869 - Bagno a Ripoli (Firenze ) 1924
Fra il 1883 e il 1887 fu allievo di L. Norfini all'istituto d’Arte di Lucca. Negli anni della formazione ebbe contatti con l’ambiente artistico legato a S. Lega: ne assunse influenze del Naturalismo toscano che caratterizzarono la sua maniera fino alla metà degli anni '90, quando si iscrisse alla Scuola Libera del Nudo all'Accademia di Firenze. Legatosi in rapporto di amicizia e di lavoro con F. Pagni, entrò nella compagine artistica gravitante attorno alla personalità del musicista G. Puccini, che risiedeva a Torre del Lago (Lucca). Trasferitosi in quei luoghi, ne trasse ispirazione per opere dove compaiono spunti comuni ad altri pittori postmacchiaioli e che presentò a Firenze fin dal 1894 (In capanna, Padule di Massaciuccoli; 1899, Due fanciulle sul lago). Negli stessi anni eseguì decorazioni murali a tempera (Villa Orlando a Torre del Lago e Villa Ginori alla Piaggetta), variando da forme naturalistiche ad altre già floreali e liberty. Dopo la partenza di Pagni per l’America nel 1904, Fanelli si trasferì a Viareggio e vi frequentò L. Viani, E. Pea, M. Levy e il poeta E. Jenco.
