Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

DA RIOS LUIGI
Vittorio Veneto (Treviso) 1844 - Venezia 1892
Dopo gli studi all’Accademia di Venezia, dove tra il 1859 e il 1864 ottenne numerosi riconoscimenti in diverse discipline, si trasferì a Firenze per studiare i maestri del Rinascimento. Rientrato a Venezia, si dedicò inizialmente alla ritrattistica e in seguito alla pittura di genere, in particolare ai soggetti veneziani, secondo i canoni della tradizione locale. Ospite assiduo delle mostre veneziane, dal 1867 al 1875 e dal 1878 al 1881, partecipò anche alle esposizioni di Milano (1874, Il custode della casa di Dio; 1878, Un virtuoso del secolo scorso; 1881, Fondamenta a Venezia e Tentazioni nella casa di Dio), di Torino (1879, Cosa hai fatto?) e di Firenze (1880, Ricreazione, Fondamenta a Venezia). All'Esposizione veneziana del 1887 presentò II papà non arriva. Si dedicò anche alla decorazione a fresco, eseguendo un murale per l’Hotel Europa di Milano, con scene del Carnevale veneziano, e nel 1864 alcuni affreschi neosettecenteschi per la Villa Bisacco Palazzi e per la Parrocchiale di Chirignano.
