Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

COSTA GIUSEPPE
Napoli 1852 - 1912
Figlio di un impiegato postale, seguì la famiglia a Chieti dove frequentò una scuola privata di pittura e poté conoscere e frequentare F. P. Michetti. Ritornato a Napoli, si iscrisse all’Accademia di Belle Arti e fu allievo prima di D. Morelli e in seguito di A. Talarico con il quale si specializzò nella ritrattistica. L'artista espose con regolarità alle Promotrici napoletane fino al 1911 (1875, Necessità e modestia; 1876, Costume napoletano e Un po' di buon umore anche contro tempo non fa male; 1881, E’ pronto alla soma; 1885, Ritratto del padre), adottando nel quadro di genere quell'attenta trascrizione verista unita a compostezza formale che si riconoscono nei Suonatori ambulanti del 1891 (Napoli, Comune). Dal 1873 fu presente anche alle mostre di Genova (Un momento di contentezza), Milano (1880, Il regalo di Pasqua - costume napoletano) e Roma (1883, Amore innocuo). Il pittore mantenne l'attività di ritrattista fino agli anni tardi, richiesto nell’ambiente del collezionismo partenopeo (Ritratto dell'Ing. Astarita, esposto a Napoli nel 1906).
