Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

Firenze 1842 - 1924
Frequentò l’Accademia fiorentina dal 1855 ed esordì nel 1861 alla prima Esposizione Nazionale con Cristoforo Colombo dopo tanti rifiuti sopportati in patria, in Portogallo ed in Spagna ottiene finalmente da Ferdinando l'atto di partenza. Ai soggetti di genere storico il pittore rimase fedele presentando alle promotrici fiorentine del 1865,1866 e 1868 opere ispirate alla vita di Dante. Dopo il 1870 gli interessi del pittore si volsero piuttosto verso la pittura di genere (Le calende di Maggio a Firenze, esposto a Torino nel 1868), ma fu soprattutto con i ritratti che ottenne una fama autorevole, almeno in ambito toscano (R. William Spranger, Firenze, Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Palazzo Pitti). La sua clientela, composta dall'alta società fiorentina, apprezzava le raffinate gamme cromatiche e la stesura perlacea dei suoi quadri: un preziosismo pittorico che trovava gli esiti più apprezzati nella raffigurazione della figura femminile come nei Nudi di donna esposti a Firenze nel 1907-1908 quando, dopo anni di assenza dalle mostre, il pittore si ripresentò al pubblico.
