Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

CASTIGLIONE GIUSEPPE
Napoli 1829 - dopo il 1916
Dopo aver studiato all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli con G. Smargiassi, completò la sua preparazione a Roma e a Firenze. Nella sua lunga attività artistica spaziò dalla pittura d’interni a quella di paesaggio e di vedute di antichi castelli, ai quadri di soggetto storico, senza tralasciare la ritrattistica. Tra le opere esposte alle biennali borboniche tra il 1848 e il 1859 figurano la cosiddetta Vaccheria di Capodimonte (1851, Caserta, Palazzo Reale), Un interno della chiesa di San Filippo Neri (1855, Napoli, Museo di Capodimonte), Un interno della cattedrale di Napoli (1859, Napoli, Palazzo Reale). Nel 1860 si stabilì a Parigi dove si fece apprezzare ai Salon con ritratti e opere di tema storico-letterario (Pia dei Tolomei, 1868; Maria dei Medici, 1873; Paolo e Francesca, 1899). Alla dettagliata pittura d’interni tornava nel Le Salon Carrée au Musée du Louvre, Parigi, Museo del Louvre). Sporadicamente inviò quadretti di genere alle promotrici napoletane (1867, La Gioventù e La triste novella), e con opere più impegnative fu presente ad altre esposizioni nazionali ed europee (Torino 1880, Pietroburgo 1898, Parigi 1900, Londra 1904).
