Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

CAMINO GIUSEPPE
Torino 1818 - Caluso (Torino) 1890
Seguì i corsi di disegno all'Accademia Albertina e fu allievo di G. Baglioni. Dal 1842 iniziò a esporre alla Promotrice di Torino vedute prospettiche, paesaggi e soggetti storico-letterari. Tra il 1845 e il 1846 compì viaggi di studio a Napoli e a Roma, traendone ispirazione per i propri dipinti (Messa dei primi tempi cristiani in una foresta, 1847, Agliè, Castello). Fra il 1850 e il 1851 soggiornò a Parigi, Ginevra e Londra, rinnovando il suo stile su influsso del Paesismo svizzero e tedesco; nei suoi tempestosi paesaggi è infatti avvertibile il ri-cordo dell'opera di C. Rottman (Il diradarsi del temporale, 1856, Torino, Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna). Con gli anni ‘60 i suoi paesaggi assunsero un’atmosfera più serena (Cima delle Alpi, Valle di Gressoney, 1861, Firenze, Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Palazzo Pitti; Alto Canavese, 1883, Roma, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna). Espose frequentemente alle Promotrici di Genova e Firenze, a Milano e a Bologna. Realizzò anche ritratti e dipinti religiosi (lunetta della chiesa di San Massimo, Torino, in collaborazione con A. Gastaldi). Lavorò anche come scenografo per il teatro Scribe (1858) e per il Regio di Torino (1873).
