Dictionary of Artists

 

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

BIAGETTI BIAGIO
Porto Recanati (Macerata) 1877 - Macerata 1948
Discepolo e collaboratore di L. Seitz, studiò a Roma tra il 1894 e il 1898. Fra le sue prime opere è la lunetta a fresco con La Madonna fra gli angeli (1901, Recanati, chiesa di San Leopardo). Dal 1909 al 1918 lavorò a importanti commissioni riguardanti cicli a fresco nella collegiata di San Biagio a Pollenza, nella basilica del Santo a Padova (1910), nella chiesa di San Giacomo a Udine, nella basilica di Loreto e ancora nelle cattedrali di Treviso, di Parma e di Jesi. Opere a mosaico si trovano a Roma nella chiesa di Santa Croce al Flaminio e in San Giovanni in Laterano. Accanto all'attività artistica sviluppò interesse per la critica e la saggistica collaborando per la rivista L'Artista moderno e per Arte cristiana. Divenuto direttore artistico delle pitture dei Palazzi Apostolici (1921), istituì il primo laboratorio di restauro (1922) occupandosi poi anche della sistemazione e decorazione della Pinacoteca Vaticana. Fornito di grande preparazione teorica e versatilità tecnica, con le sue ricerche sul Simbolismo e sul Divisionismo e con la sua opera diede impulso al rinnovamento dell’arte religiosa in Italia.
