Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

BARZAGHI CATTANEO ANTONIO
Lugano (Svizzera) 1834 - 1922
Grazie all'appoggio di alcune famiglie di Lugano poté iscriversi, a sedici anni, all’Accademia di Brera dove studiò con E. Fontana, sotto la direzione di G. Bertini. Distintosi ai concorsi scolastici, dipinse inizialmente quadri di soggetto storico-letterario, che espose a Brera tra il 1861 e il 1869. A partire dagli anni '70 iniziò a riscuotere successo di critica e di mercato, anche all'estero: nel 1883 presentava a Zurigo 14 quadri di genere e di storia e un Ritratto dell'editore Hoepli; nello stesso anno esponeva a Roma Lady Jane Gray. In occasione di un soggiorno in Inghilterra nel 1890, ebbe risonanza il suo Extremum dedit suavium esposto a Liverpool e a Manchester. L’artista ha poi lasciato, in Italia e in Svizzera, una serie di affreschi, tecnica che apprese dal Bertini: la decorazione, realizzata con il maestro, della chiesa di San Spiridione a Trieste (1867); il plafone della Tonhalle a Zurigo; gli affreschi nella chiesa di Horgen e nella sala del Parlamento di Berna (1900). Suo allievo prima, e collaboratore poi, fu il nipote Plinio Barzaghi Cattaneo (Lugano 1868-1929).
