Dictionary of Artists

To meet the requirement of scholars, art dealers, collectors or simple amateurs of having a quick and effective tool at their disposal to satisfy the various exigencies connected with the world of art, first of all the in-depth analysis of the work of painters, sculptors, engravers, photographers, etc., the "Dictionary of artists" puts itself up as an annotated list of names, sometimes accompanied, if marked by an asterisk, by a biography and by some signature examples.

Each artist is matched with a series of index cards regarding the works registered in the Data Bank of the Matteucci Institute, which can be issued on request.

The biographies are taken from the Dizionario degli artisti edited by Cristina Bonagura, integral part of the work Pittori & pittura dell'Ottocento italiano (1996-1997), coordinated by Giuliano Matteucci with the cooperation of Paul Nicholls and realized by the Redazioni Grandi Opere of the "Istituto Geografico De Agostini", to whom the Matteucci Institute expresses its sincere thanks for authorizing the circulation of the texts on line.

Controversa è la dizione esatta del nome del pittore, che ha firmato una serie di vedute di Milano a volte come “Bartezaghi”, “Battezzati” o “Bartezago”. Disegnatore di costumi teatrali, litografo e fotografo, affiancò a queste attività quella di pittore, documentata dalla costante presenza, dal 1851 al 1894, alle esposizioni di Brera a Milano, nonché alle promotrici di Genova e Torino. L'interesse per la fotografia si accompagnò con la ricerca di una rappresentazione esatta, oggettiva, che l'artista conduceva nelle vedute e nelle prospettive, genere pittorico in cui, sulla scia di L. Bisi, raggiunse i suoi risultati migliori. Soggetti ricorrenti furono gli edifici monumentali milanesi (Veduta di S. Lorenzo in Milano, presa dalla Vetra, 1851; L'interno della chiesa di S. Alessandro in Milano, 1853) insieme a scorci pittoreschi di Venezia. Puntuale è anche la ricerca di effetti d'ambiente come in Veduta dell'Albergo di Bellagio, con effetto di notte (esposto a Milano nel 1851) o Veduta del Palazzo ducale di Venezia, con temporale, esposto a Genova nel 1862).
